 NEW FORD RANGER

FORD LAUNCHES MIGHTY 4.0-LITRE V6 MODEL

With the launch of its new Ford Ranger pickup range, Ford has added a new breath-taking 4,0-litre powerplant which is set to become a firm favourite of South African motorists who are looking for "True Blue" Ford performance.

This spectacular new pickup, conceived specifically to meet the requirements of those South African motorists, farmers and fleet managers who demand the very ultimate in performance, is available in four Double Cab and two Super Cab variants. The Super Cab is also a brand new introduction, which takes the form of an extended single cab.

The 4.0-litre V6 Ranger is the flagship model in the new, comprehensive Ford pickup range, which incorporates commercial vehicles that stretch from half- to one ton.

This tried and tested engine has an established pedigree, having provided excellent service in the Ford Explorer range. Its state-of-the-art V6 powerplant is controlled by the high tech EEC-V engine management system, which ensures precise strategic engine function control.

It is a longitudinally-mounted engine with two single overhead camshafts (one on each bank of the V6 controls both the inlet and outlet valve). The 4.0-litre motor also features a cast-iron cylinder block with cast aluminium cylinder heads.

The cylinder block is designed for overall rigidity whereas the aluminium cylinder head facilitates a low maintenance item plus a reduction in noise levels usually associated with the cam and valve actions.

The inlet manifold arrangement includes an effective runner length-tuning valve, which is operated by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to maximise both engine power and torque. Essentially, this means that the intake pipe length can be varied in both length and diameter so as to improve induction of air and fuel. This, in turn, enhances engine output performance and fuel efficiency.

Ford’s 104 pin EEC V PCM controls the engine management, PATS system, automatic transmission and air-conditioning system. EEC-V is an advanced engine management system that is designed to provide refined, reliable and responsive fuel efficiency by monitoring, controlling and adjusting strategic engine function.

With all of these features behind the 4.0-litre V6 petrol engine, it's no surprise that it develops a powerful 154 kW (at 5250 r/min) and an enormous 323 Nm of torque at just 3000 r/min. It is no doubt that this extra get-up-and-go will provide South African motorists with the power needed to push the boundaries and explore those forgotten trails.

While the super-powerful 4.0-litre Ranger’s power is impressive in itself, it is by no means the only exciting feature of this true blue Ford. The Ranger also features a totally new front end, which epitomises the masculinity and brawn that underlies the truly American Ford Ranger. The somewhat irreverent and rebellious look of this new Ranger should have young thrill-seekers clamouring for more.

The new two-piece bumper design not only enhances the Ranger’s appearance but also improves aerodynamics for reduced resistance and wind noise. The redesigned chrome radiator grille and new bonnet provide stronger visual lines while, at the same time, improving forward visibility. Tinted and toughened side and front windscreens provide the ultimate in image and comfort.

The distinctive Ford oval is featured throughout the vehicle, gracing the new front nudge bar, sill protectors and rear step bumper. The clear message is that this is undoubtedly a genuine Ford.

All 4.0-litre V6 Super- and Double Cab models boast alloy wheels, air conditioner, electric mirrors, optional leather seats, electric windows, remote central locking and a number of other features which make these new vehicles an exceptional buy.

A double skinned load box and ribbed load floor provide all the strength and durability one could ever need while the 180° tailgate support stays improve the load boxes access area, facilitating the handling of awkward loads.

A truly nifty feature, which is unique to the new Ford Ranger Super- and Double Cabs, is the 12V power point at the rear of the load box, which is ideal for powering equipment such as refrigerators.

With safety a priority in Ford’s books, the bold new 4.0-litre Ranger boasts all the safety features that have put the Ranger at the top of the safety stakes. The new Ranger benefits from increased cabin strength, power steering and an overlapped ladder frame design that is one of the strongest in its class.

Additional active safety features (those that help to prevent an accident from occurring in the first place) include revised suspension and brakes, a Load Apportioning Valve (LAV), improved visibility, improved driver seating and strengthened cross bracing. The 4.0-litre Double Cab models offer passenger and driver airbags, as well as ABS brakes.

Passive safety features (which cover all the measures which help to minimize or totally avoid the consequences of an accident) include front airbags for the driver and passenger in the 4.0 V6 Double Cab models, side door beams, one-piece door pressing, inertia seatbelts and antisubmarine seats that prevent the occupants slipping under the seatbelts.

Another major engineering change is the inclusion of a collapsible steering shaft.  Ranger fuel tanks are also protected by the inclusion of a fuel tank guard.

An advanced suspension – both front and rear – ensures safe and predictable handling. Upfront, motorists will discover independent suspension, with a double-wishbone, torsion bar and stabiliser. The rear suspension incorporates semi-elliptical leaf springs with Berlin eye mounts and bias mounted shock absorbers.

With the option of 4x2 or 4x4 and Super or Double Cab, the 4.0-litre Ranger offers motorists the freedom to work or play wherever they wish.

Service intervals are 10 000 km and the 4.0-litre Ranger comes with a three-year/100 000 km warranty, as well as a three-year Roadside Assistance programme.

In addition, a free Off-road training course is provided by the Ford No Boundaries club ends.
